What is diagnostic spinal ultrasound?
Diagnostic spinal ultrasound uses safe sound waves to create real‑time pictures of the soft tissues around your spine. It can show muscles, tendons, ligaments, nearby nerves, and fluid or swelling. Because it uses sound instead of X‑rays, it is painless, quick, and has no radiation.
How it helps in chiropractic care
Your chiropractor can use ultrasound to find areas of muscle injury, inflammation, or abnormal fluid that may be causing pain. It also helps guide treatments like injections or dry needling so they are more accurate and comfortable. Seeing the problem and tracking changes over time lets your chiropractor adjust care based on how you are healing.
What to expect and its limits
An ultrasound exam is done in the office and usually takes only a few minutes — gel is placed on the skin and a small probe is moved over the area. Results are often shared right away and used to plan treatment. Ultrasound is excellent for soft tissues but cannot show the inside of bones or all disc problems; sometimes an X‑ray or MRI is still needed for a full picture.
